RMS Sponsored Driver Darren Wolke Scores First Series Win
June 24, 2008

Racing Media Services sponsored driver (yes, DRIVER!) Darren Wolke recently scored his first Mid-American Stock Car Series feature win at the Over the Hill 40 held at La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway in West Salem, Wisconsin. The RMS backed stock car driver hailing from Belle Plain, Minnesota, which is also home to Team Suzuki rookie phenom Ryan Dungey. Darren is a long time friend to RMS captain Michael Urban, who himself has spent a few years piloting stock cars.

Wolke put his Dodge Charger late-model stock car on the pole, the starting position awarded to the fastest qualifier, and the field behind quickly fell into a single file formation shortly after the green flag dropped. There are no gates in this type of racing. The drivers behind Wolke shuffled for position for nine laps. The first caution came out when another series driver, Kyle Shear, spun out in turn two, making contact with the series points leader, driver James Swan, in the process.

While some of the drivers behind Wolke took advantage of the double-file restart, it was Wolke who sat in the best seat in the house, checking out Stewart-style. Bill Prietzel was one of the drivers taking advantage of the double-file restart, making his way around a few drivers and putting himself in second place, but still facing the daunting task of reeling in RMS driver Darren Wolke.

Another yellow on lap 28 gave Prietzel the break he needed to put his front bumper to Wolke’s rear. On the restart, the accomplished Wolke put his skills and wisdom to use and kept Prietzel behind him. It was reminiscent of a Carmichael vs. Stewart battle as, with 9 laps to go, Prietzel put his race side by side to Wolke’s. in turn three, the rain gods smiled on Wolke and dumped their heavenly gift. In stock car racing, when the rain falls the race stops and the results fall back to the last completed lap, in which the RMS driver Wolke led.

As we say in racing, “a win is a win” and Wolke gladly took his win, stating, “I think we would have had Bill covered anyway. But I think it would have been a really good race. We did a lot of research this winter. This is the set up that came out (of it) and it’s pretty decent.”

Congratulations to RMS driver Darren Wolke on his first career Mid American Stock Car Series win!
